What About The Children

The Children and You
Think of the worst moment you have ever experienced in your life and the feeling that you experience. When people undergo hardships many state their life will never be the same again but ultimately after accepting, healing, therapy and closure they become more stronger, resilient and independent individuals. This is not the case for children in conflict.
Children in conflict zones encounter severe hardships everyday and instead of receiving the necessary healing, therapy or closure they face yet another day in war.
An estimated 2 million children have been killed in armed conflict in the past decade. According to a report outlined by UNICEF on the Secretary-General of the United Nations, three times as many have been seriously injured or permanently disabled. Countless others innocent children have been forced to witness or even to take part in horrifying acts of violence and warfare. Sadly the facts point to the realization that basic human values are being oppressed, where children are exploited as soldiers, starved and exposed to extreme brutality.

"The sources of conflict and war are pervasive and deep. To reach them will require our utmost effort to enhance respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, to promote sustainable economic and social development for wider prosperity, to alleviate distress and to curtail the existence and use of massively destructive weapons."
United Nations Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali,
An Agenda for Peace, 1995.
